SaviTalk Podcast - Questioning the Core of Identity Security

Written by Saviynt | Jul 4, 2025 7:10:57 AM

What if we’ve been doing identity wrong for 20 years? For this next installment of the SaviTalk podcast, we welcome two prominent voices in identity security to help us grapple with the big, existential questions enterprises, practitioners and leaders are facing today.

Ian Glazer - Founder of Weave Identity and IDPro and current VP of product strategy at SGNL, Ian is one of the most respected voices in identity. With decades of experience in standards, governance, and strategy, he’s known for pushing the boundaries of how identity is practiced and what needs to change.

Richard Bird - Often called the “Godfather of Identity”, Richard is a former CISO and CIO, and now serves as Chief Security Officer at Singulr AI. He’s known for diving deep into the messy, “dirty” reality of identity operations, emerging stronger and sharper to help shine a light on a better way forward.

Savitalk Episode 2: Rewriting the Rules of Identity Security

What if we’ve been doing identity wrong for 20 years? What now? In this episode of SaviTalk, our hosts—Simon Gooch, David Lee and Henrique Teixeria—dive in with our guests to go deep into questions that challenge the very core of identity security.

Together, they tackle a wide range of the big questions facing identity and security, such as:

  • What is “identity security,” really? And does the term even help?
  • How do we shift from arguing about taxonomy and labeling to real solutions that protect organizations over the next 30 years?
  • Can we build a language to communicate effectively between practitioners, leaders and customers?
  • What would it take to build a universal data model for IAM and make identity the “source of truth” for data — the hub from which business, security, and privacy radiate?
  • How do we prepare the new generation of AI-native identity practitioners?

Solving Identity’s Data Problem

Insights from Ian: “Identity has been laboring under an enormous hangover for 20 some years, which is SOCs. And there’s this realization that maybe we need to be doing some things differently. One of the things is to think about the data we’re working with. We are identity people, not data people. We comedically suck at managing data … We could build a better, healthier vendor ecosystem and customer ecosystem by opening up our data to data professionals to help serve the enterprise and get better outcomes.”

Identity Security’s Opportunity to Become the Source of Truth

Insights from Richard: “There’s an opportunity for Identity in the security community. Those that are gaining traction and winning today are using a new model, doing data differently—bringing together data from all sources and contextualizing it. We have so much information in Identity—so much rich data. … I do not believe identity security is separate from cybersecurity. It’s about putting identity in their rightful place on the throne of both security, operations, business value and customer privacy. Identity security becoming the source of truth for all of these. For companies that achieve this source of truth, everything else radiates from it. It’s going to take a tremendous amount of rethinking and restructuring of identity security.”

This episode is a bold call to action for change. Whether or not we agree on the taxonomy, we know this much: the status quo in identity is not enough in the modern threat landscape. It’s time for identity to take its rightful place at the center of cybersecurity, operations, and digital trust.
