The biggest shift in the enterprise software industry of recent years is unquestionably the move away from on-premise software to cloud-based software-as-a-service platforms. It changes how users interact with software, how companies implement it, how IT professionals secure it, and how auditors measure it.
It’s revolutionized just about every key enterprise software market – from Customer Relationship Management (CRM) to Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) to Identity and Access Management (IAM). In its wake, many traditional on-prem companies have been left behind, while others (like Salesforce, Workday, etc.) rode the wave of cloud transformation to the top.
Right now, however, we’re living through the middle of the transition period, where most companies are using a blend of cloud and on-prem technologies. The shift toward cloud introduces a host of benefits, including lower costs of ownership, ease of maintenance, and simplified user access controls. But it also presents a number of unique challenges, particularly when considering IT environments that use cloud technologies alongside existing on-prem solutions.
As an auditor, assessing compliance and security in these hybrid IT environments presents new challenges. Moving toward a continuous compliance approach may help companies manage this new wave of challenges, turning compliance in the cloud era into a byproduct of good IT governance, instead of a goal in and of itself.
